Meet The Clan

We went to visit a couple of friends at the incredible and I mean - literally amaaazing DunCarron Medieval Fort outside Stirling in Scotland. It was an Open Day where we got to be part of the full size medieval village in action, complete with archery, blacksmiths, stone carving, arts, crafts, authentic clan outfits and some great music from the legendary band Saor Patrol.

My favorite was the Apothecary who gave us an in-depth insight into the world of medieval medicine. He described how their lack of microbiology led to the kind of hygiene that makes our hair curl in this hypersanitised world of ours. We also learned how 'doing one's business' in the street or perhaps at the side of a tent during a party wouldn't have lifted an eyebrow.

I also loved the archery which is my all-time sport of choice but just imagine... If archery weren't just a sport, it were a lifeline, a skill and the only way of staying alive. Kind of love that thought.

Visiting DunCarron allowed my imagination to run wild and provided endless inspiration to my writing. I'm thinking of setting up a little tent and moving in on a more permanent basis! Thank you guys for putting the most amazing historical education site in Scotland right there for us all to enjoy.
